To Give Something Back, 2020-2024. Multimedia installation → Kunstraum Kreuzberg

In To Give Something Back (2020–24) a lost object—another’s fur hat—is replaced in situ in the form of its own photographic image; materially, the hat remains a lacuna while its image has taken on an entirely new physical shape: photographed before a red backdrop, it becomes a resin sculpture in the shape of a plush cushion, returned to its accustomed place on a lace doily atop a wooden shelf.
Kellein has filmed grainy footage of this act of replacement and later used both video and still images—physically detached media that are more easily circulated. Other resulting works are a wall-based lamp in the silhouette of the cushion and a distorted film still, albeit deteriorated to the point of unrecognizability.
